*CLYDE “RED” WHITMAN coached 17 years at East Stroudsburg between 1961-1979, with a record of 180-76-6. He holds ESU records for longest wrestling coach tenure, most dual wins and is second in win percentage. He guided 22 PSAC champions and more than 20 All-American medalists. Red coached ESU’s highest three finishes in Division I – 8th and twice 13th from 1966-68. His top wrestlers were Gary Cook (NCAA 4,3,3 in Div. I) and heavyweight Dick Schumacher, a Div. II national champ and NCAA 5,5.
Red led five Top 10 Div. II teams, including 5th, the school’s best-ever place. Red’s 1966 team was undefeated in duals. He was an ESU professor and athletic director, earning their “Great Teacher” award in 1995. He was inducted into the PA Athletic Conference Hall of Fame, plus the halls of fame at West Chester and East Stroudsburg. He passed away in 2006 at age 74.
